Skillet Pizza

I’ll admit it. I love pizza!

There are so many unique ways to make pizza that it never seems to taste the same. In our home we like to try different kinds of crusts, toppings, cheeses, and baking methods. Recently, Elizabeth was experimenting with a pizza stone until she broke it with a steam blast while making sourdough bread. That a story for another day!

According to Pizza Recipe, more than 30 billion pizzas are eaten worldwide each year. This means that pizza is the most popular dish in the world with Norwegians eating the most pizzas on a per person ratio. Did you know that there are more than 600 varieties of pizza around the world? Here are a few of the most unusual pizzas I’ve ever heard of:

Squid Ink Pizza

  • Hot Dog Stuffed Crust Pizza - Iceland

  • Sauerkraut Pizza - Russia

  • Squid Ink Pizza - Japan

  • Bone Marrow Pizza - United Kingdom

Why is pizza so popular all over the world? Every person and every culture has different tastes in foods and pizza is highly versatile. Using ingredients that are unique to their country and culture, pizza has been customized so that people all over the world can enjoy eating it.

If the idea of making a pizza crust from scratch has stopped you from trying homemade pizza in the past, this recipe is for you. With this simple mix and pour crust, you’ll find yourself enjoying the pizza making process and personalizing it to suit your taste.

Unlike any other food, it has the power to bring people together so give this recipe a try and see if you can bring your family together.

Brown ground beef until no longer pink. When using Sonrise Farms ground beef, there is no fat to be drained plus the fat that is there is a healthy fat.

Combine flour, Italian seasonings, salt, pepper, milk and eggs; blend until smooth. Our favorite flour to use in this recipe is Janie’s Mill All Purpose Organic Flour. We love their flours and we love that they are a local company.

Pour batter into a well-greased 12-inch cast iron skillet, tilting pan so batter covers the bottom. If you don’t have a cast iron skillet, you can use a 12-inch pizza pan.

Spoon beef over the top along any other toppings of your choice. In addition to the ground beef, we used Sonrise Farms pepperoni (diced), onions and green peppers. These pepperoni are nitrite free, not greasy, and taste amazing. You can use whatever topping you enjoy so now is your time to get creative

Bake for 20-25 minutes on lowest oven rack. Remove from oven, spoon pizza sauce over top and sprinkle with cheese. We use 2 cups of homemade mozzarella which Elizabeth makes from the milk of her Jersey cow, Magnolia.

Bake an additional 10 minutes or until cheese is melted.

When we pulled it out of the oven, we realized that we forgot to spread on the pizza sauce before the cheese. No worries, we simply spread the sauce on top and popped it back in the oven for a couple minutes to warm the sauce.

Doesn’t it look delicious. I think it was the best skillet pizza we’ve made so far, but I probably say that every time.
